As a serious dive destination, Cancún is often overlooked due to its reputation as a spring break party hot spot, not to mention being overshadowed by neighboring Riviera Maya and Cozumel. But Cancún’s location on the Yucatan Peninsula makes it an ideal jumping off point for a huge variety of dive adventures. From here, divers can stay local to hit wrecks such as the Barrera and Anaya — a pair of navy minesweepers that lay just a short boat ride from the city — and wander the offshore reefs perforated by fishy tunnels often circled by eagle rays and occupied by nurse sharks.

For a change of scenery, day trips can be arranged to plunge into the overhead environments of Riviera Maya’s cenotes or drift the lush walls of Cozumel. And the newest adventure, breaking mainstream at this classic vacation hot spot, is the biggest yet: whale sharks. Up the coast from Cancún, the waters between Holbox and Contoy islands host one of the largest seasonal populations of whale sharks in the world — an estimated 500 animals. Just like at most whale shark hot spots around the world, encounters here are snorkel only; but unlike at those other destinations, sightings in these waters are so common they come with a money-back guarantee during the season. — TM

Need to Know

Getting There: Flights to Cancún depart daily from all major American airline hubs. Check with the resort to see if airport transfers are provided. If not, taxis or shared vans are easy to find at the airport’s passenger services area.

When to Go: The reefs of Cancún and Cozumel offer top-notch diving year-round, as do the nearby cenotes, but the whale shark excursions are available only during the summer months, from June through September.

Dive Conditions: During the summer the water is calmer and water temperatures can climb to the mid-80s. Surface conditions can be rougher during the winter months, with water temps dipping to the high 70s. Viz on the deeper reefs averages 80 feet but is less on shallow sites. At Holbox, where plankton clouds the water, viz is only 20 to 40 feet.

Operator/Accommodations: Most of Cancún’s dive centers offer a wide range of services, from local dive trips to jungle excursions. Manta Divers (www.mantadivers.com), for example, offers dive packages that include local dives, cenotes and day trips to Cozumel, as well as snorkeling trips, land-based tours and whale shark encounters. You can snag a great deal at the five-star Luxury Beach Resorts (www.luxurybeachresorts.net) properties if you’re in the time-share market and willing to sit through a 90-minute presentation. Otherwise, check out the Gran Meliá Cancún (www.solmelia.com).

Price Tag: At Manta Divers, local five-dive packages start at $175 per person, while a nine-dive package, including day trips to the cenotes and Cozumel, costs $447 per person. Whale shark encounters departing from Cancún cost $175 per person. If you choose the Luxury Beach Resorts option, you can book an all-inclusive four-day package for $249 per couple (two children under 11 stay free), but diving is off site and not included in the price. Rooms at the Gran Meliá Cancún start at $89 per night.

Inside Tip: When not diving, get out of the hotel zone and explore the modern Mexican metropolis of Cancún proper. When taking a taxi, always establish the price before driving away — better yet, the local bus system provides transport from the hotel zone to practically any part of the city for 6.50 pesos (about 50 cents).

I did 5 dives in 3 days in Cancun and it was fabulous. I used a small operation called personal divers, www.personaldivers.com Jesus and Lisa are a husband and wife team that run it and they are a pleasure to deal with. I highly recommend them to anyone goung to Cancun. I did 1 night dive which was great. Did 2 dives in the Cenotes (caverns) and it was nothing short of AMAZING. If you go to Cancun and do not dive the Cenotes, you are missing out on the dive of your life! Last day was a wreck dive followed by a reef dive that was a drift dive. We drifted about 4 miles on the current over the reef with tons of sea life, corals, sponges, barracude etc. It was another amazing dive. I am told that the diving in Cozumel is supposed to be better than in Cancun, but I have no complaints about the diving in Cancun. It was a great experience!

What It’s Like… To Dive with a Sailfish

I’m snorkeling 10 feet underwater with no bottom in sight, as a large fleet of fishing boats is fast-trolling lines with giant shark hooks, trying to capture the same fish I’m attempting to photograph. Getting between a food source and a 6-foot predator capable of bursts of speed more than 60 miles per hour might seem like insanity, but it’s doubly dangerous when you consider this prize billfish’s mighty bill is a formidable weapon that could skewer me and turn me into shish kebab.

At this spot halfway between Mexico’s Isla Mujeres and Cancun, more than 25 sailfish have concentrated below a shimmering school of Brazilian sardines, flashing brilliant neon colors as they ready their attack. A huge sailfish with a 3-foot rapier on its mouth rockets past me and into the large, slow-moving ball of sardines; the baitball explodes like fireworks — first one sailfish, then another bursts in to feed on the stunned fish.

It’s an example of rare behavior called cooperative feeding, witnessed in only a few species like whales and dolphins. Pairs of sailfish take turns swimming into the school while the rest take up positions outside the ball, moving in unison like sheepdogs to herd the hapless sardines against the surface. Out of breath, I swim to the surface and gasp for air, and am nearly bombarded by screaming pelicans and gulls that are diving into the moveable feast below.

I wait a brief minute before diving down again, not wanting to miss out on the action. A small group of panicked sardines tries to use me as a shield against the blur of jousting sailfish as they race in to feed, slashing their bills just inches from my camera lens. I know I should fear for my life, but I realize this creature has the control and accuracy to thread a needle. Breathless from the encounter, I kick back to the surface, grateful that I’ve just fenced with a sailfish and lived to tell the tale.

The Cancun Underwater Museum Opens Its Doors to Life

Cancun, Mexico – December 2nd, 2010 — The Cancun Underwater Museum officially opened its doors on November 26, 2010, completing the exhibition titled “The Silent Evolution” by artist Jason deCaires Taylor. With 400 life-size sculptures submerged, this completed phase 2 of the world’s largest underwater museum, located in the beautiful waters of Cancun.

The National Park, located in Isla Mujeres Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc welcomes approximately 750,000 tourists a year and is now home this impressive sculpture museum. Just days after almost all the sculptures were submerged, the welcoming they received by Mother Nature was amazing, with hundreds of swarming Gray Angel fish, that up until now, were rarely seen around the Manchones area.

The main gallery is formed by 400 life-size figures, based on real people. Its building required 18 months of hard work, 120 tons of cement, 400 kg of silicone, 3,800 glass fiber and more than 120 submarine work hours, as well as effort and dedication from a committed team with a dream, that began almost two years ago.

The technique, developed by the sculptor, allows the creation of life-size figures that keep the models original gestures and positions. The sinking process to more than 10 meters of depth consists on placing the sculptures over a 2 tons base, which will be positioned safely on rocky surfaces to avoid any damage caused by waves. The Underwater Museum can be appreciated not only from the bottom of the sea, all the pieces are placed in a way that looks like a human eye as seen from the air.

The first sinking took place on November 14th, 2009. In the project’s first phase and under the supervision of the renowned artist and sub aquatic sculpture Jason deCaires Taylor, three sculptures were submerged: “Coleccionista de Sueños” (Dream Collector), “Hombre en llamas” (Man on Fire) and “La Jardinera de la Esperanza” (The Gardener of Hope). The sculptures where placed near the natural reefs and close to marine life habitats in order to create a natural ecosystem that helps maintain corals and reefs in the best conditions.

The project is backed by Cancun’s Ministry of Environment and its Nautical Association and has required an investment of more than $350,000 USD, in order to allow the natural reefs that surround the sculptures, to remain untouched. That is why this Marine Park was up for the challenge and developed a way to deviate tourists from the natural habitats, through coral reefs, without having to loose its visitors and the $36 million dollars that these represent in annual income.

It is important to point out that due to the success of this great project, Sculptor and artist Jason deCaires Taylor, has accepted the position as the museum’s artistic director

The cultural and environmental importance of the project, make the Underwater Museum a once in a lifetime experience. In collaboration with marine biologists and other experts from the National Marine Park and – Artificial Reefs, a company based in the USA, the sculptures have been designed to attract coral, but have also been immersed and positioned in a certain way and on certain so that they contribute to the further development of different coral species.

These magnificent sculptures will be available for tourists and visitors that wish to admire the originality, beauty and uniqueness of these works of art, while snorkeling or dive in the sub aquatic museum, as one of the many activities to do in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Entrance to the museum is free, although is highly recommended that visitors of the museum utilize an appropriate tour operator with trained professionals to enjoy this experience to the most.
